Abstract

Hypertension is a non-communicable disease and a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. A combination of slow deep breathing and hydrotherapy is a non-pharmacological complementary therapy that may help lower blood pressure in hypertensive patients. This study aimed to determine the effect of the combined therapies on blood pressure among hypertensive patients in Kuok Village, within the working area of Kuok Community Health Center (UPT Puskesmas Kuok). A quantitative quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest-postest approach was employed. The study population consisted of 158 hypertensive patients, with a sample of 34 respondents selected through purposive sampling. The combined intervention was administered ten days, and data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. The results showed that mean systolic blood pressure decreased from 146.91 mmHg to 130.97 mmHg, while mean diastolic blood pressure decreased from 92.42 mmHg to 83.15 mmHg after the intervention. Statistical analysis revealed a significant effect on both systolic and diastolic blood pressure reduction (p=0.000). It is concluded that the combination of slow deep breathing and hydrotherapy is effective in lowering blood pressure in hypertensive patients and can serve as a complementary therapy alongside medical treatment.
