Jious’ Sabuah became a place to learn religion in South Bolaang Mongondow in the 20th century. The presence of the Sabuah was most significant to the Muslim society at that time. Unfortunately, the Sabuah as an institution of traditional Islamic education did not develop and was forgotten. This history has not yet been discussed either in the context of the discourse of Islamic education in Nusantara or Bolaang Mongondow. This article aims to explain Jiou’s role and Sabuah as a place of traditional Islamic education in South Bolaang Mongondow in the 20th century. This article used the approaches of history, social, and culture, and the historical method with the stages of heuristic, verification, interpretation, and historiography. The findings in this article explain that Jiou’s role developed the Sabuah as the institution of Islamic education in South Bolaang Mongondow in the 20th century. The educational system at the Sabuah focused on an effort to teach the way of reciting the Qur’an. The 20th-century historical dynamics became the reason this local institution did not develop. These findings have implications, asserting that the Sabuah never became a centre of traditional Islamic education in South Bolaang Mongondow. This historical result has novelty in the form of a historical contribution in introducing the Sabuah as a local educational institution. Theoretical discussion in this article also gives a theoretical view about the historical dynamics caused by changes in culture and social role. The historical result and theoretical discussion in this article give the historical and theoretical contributions to the discourse of Islamic education in Nusantara.
