Abstract

The utilization of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Islamic Religious Education (IRE) has become increasingly relevant in the digital era due to rapid technological advancement and the growing need for innovative educational approaches. This study aims to examine the opportunities, challenges, and implications of AI integration in Islamic Religious Education learning. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method through literature review and contextual analysis of educational technology, Islamic educational philosophy, and digital learning practices. Data were collected from academic journals, books, policy reports, and scholarly publications related to AI, educational technology, and Islamic education. The findings indicate that AI technologies significantly contribute to improving learning accessibility, personalization, student engagement, and instructional efficiency in Islamic education. AI-supported systems such as adaptive learning platforms, intelligent tutoring applications, automated assessment tools, and digital Islamic educational resources help students access religious learning materials more effectively and flexibly. However, the study also identifies several challenges, including reduced human interaction, ethical concerns, misinformation risks, technological inequality, and limited digital literacy among educators and students. The findings emphasize that AI should function as a supportive educational tool rather than replacing the essential human dimensions of Islamic education, particularly moral guidance, spiritual mentorship, and character formation. Therefore, balanced integration between technological innovation and Islamic educational values is necessary to ensure meaningful and ethical educational practices. The study concludes that AI possesses significant potential to strengthen Islamic Religious Education learning when implemented responsibly, inclusively, and in accordance with Islamic ethical principles.
