Abstract

Digital technology has expanded Muslim access to the Qur’an while raising questions about the contemporary relevance of Qur’anic memorization and the orientation of Qur’anic preservation. This study examines the concept and objectives of preservation in Q. al-Ḥijr [15]: 9 and their relevance to memorization practices and Muslims’ digital engagement with the Qur’an. This library-based research employs thematic-contextual analysis and a maqāṣidī approach to Qur’anic interpretation. Its principal material is Q. al-Ḥijr [15]: 9, interpreted through al-Ṭabarī’s Jāmi‘ al-Bayān, al-Rāzī’s Mafātīḥ al-Ghayb, Ibn ‘Āshūr’s al-Taḥrīr wa al-Tanwīr, and M. Quraish Shihab’s Tafsir Al-Mishbah as a representative contemporary commentary. The findings demonstrate that Qur’anic preservation encompasses protection from disappearance, addition, omission, substitution, and alteration through the Qur’an’s inimitability, collective memorization, codification, recurrent transmission, communal verification, and the development of scholarship and technology. From a maqāṣidī perspective, maintaining the Qur’an’s authenticity and continuity constitutes the verse’s immediate objective and relates fundamentally to ḥifẓ al-dīn. Meanwhile, ḥifẓ al-‘aql represents an educational and epistemic implication of studying the Qur’an rather than the direct lexical meaning of laḥāfiẓūn. The study concludes that memorization remains relevant but is not the sole mechanism of preservation. In the digital era, preservation should integrate textual, epistemic, and functional dimensions through memorization, digital verification, responsible understanding, and the actualization of Qur’anic values.
