Abstract

Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder that may be accompanied by auditory hallucinations, characterized by hearing voices or whispers in the absence of external stimuli. This condition can affect patients’ behavior, emotions, sleep, and social interactions, requiring appropriate nursing interventions. This study aimed to describe the implementation of aerobic exercise activity therapy in patients with schizophrenia experiencing auditory hallucinations at Bandar Jaya Public Health Center, Lahat. A descriptive case study design was used involving two patients with the nursing diagnosis of sensory perception disturbance: auditory hallucinations (D.0085). Data were collected through interviews, observations, physical examinations, and documentation. Aerobic exercise activity therapy was implemented for three consecutive days through therapeutic communication, education, gradual exercise practice, assistance, evaluation, and encouragement to incorporate the activity into the patients’ daily schedules. The results showed improvements in both patients’ ability to participate in activities, engagement, and independence in performing aerobic exercise. On the third day, both patients appeared calmer and more cooperative and reported feeling more relaxed, refreshed, happy, and entertained. Both patients also expressed willingness to incorporate aerobic exercise into their daily activities. Aerobic exercise activity therapy may be used as a complementary nonpharmacological intervention in nursing care for patients with schizophrenia experiencing auditory hallucinations.
