Abstract

Psychological well-being is a crucial aspect of university students' development as young adults. Father-love absence is believed to be one of the factors influencing this well-being. This study aimed to analyze the role of father-love absence as a predictor of university students' psychological well-being and to identify the contribution of each aspect of father-love absence. A quantitative approach with a descriptive correlational design was employed. A total of 318 active university students were selected through simple random sampling and completed an online questionnaire. Father-love absence was measured using an adapted scale based on Xiang and Zhou's theory, encompassing four aspects: emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and volitional absence. Psychological well-being was assessed using the adapted Ryff's Psychological Well-Being Scale (54 items). Data were analyzed using SPSS 27.0 and SmartPLS 4.0 through MANCOVA, Pearson correlation, linear regression, and PLS-SEM with bootstrapping. Results indicated that sex and academic grade did not significantly influence either variable. A significant moderate negative correlation was found between father-love absence and psychological well-being (r = –0.425, p <0.001). Father-love absence was a significant negative predictor of psychological well-being (β = –0.425, R2 = .181, p <.001). PLS-SEM analysis revealed that only behavioral absence produced a significant path toward psychological well-being (β = –0.399, T = 4.850, p <.001). These findings underscore the importance of fathers' active behavioral presence in supporting students' psychological well-being.
