Abstract

The upstream oil and gas industry is characterized by high occupational risks and work uncertainty, making contract workers vulnerable to job insecurity. This study aims to examine the effect of job insecurity on employee engagement and its dimensions, namely behavioral, cognitive, and emotional engagement, among contract workers in the upstream oil and gas industry in North Kalimantan. A quantitative causal survey design was employed. The population consisted of 248 contract workers, with 160 respondents selected through accidental sampling. Data were collected using the Job Insecurity Scale (JIS) and Employee Engagement Scale (EES) and analyzed using Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS 4. The results showed that job insecurity had a negative and significant effect on employee engagement (β = −0.673; p < 0.001; R² = 0.453). Significant negative effects were also found on behavioral, cognitive, and emotional engagement. These findings indicate that higher job insecurity is associated with lower employee engagement among contract workers in the upstream oil and gas industry in North Kalimantan.
