Abstract

The accumulation of household organic waste in coastal rural areas such as Pasar Baru Village, South Kaur District, is still conventionally managed (collect-transport-dump/burn), potentially polluting the environment, generating methane gas ( ), and accelerating local landfill overcapacity. Objective: This community service and research project aimed to enhance public knowledge, ecological awareness, and technical skills in sorting and processing kitchen organic waste into eco-enzyme in Pasar Baru Village. Methods: The approach utilized Participatory Action Learning, consisting of preparation, interactive socialization, and hands-on training on eco-enzyme production using the standard ratio formula of 3:1:10 (3 parts kitchen waste, 1 part sugar source, 10 parts water) with upcycled plastic containers. Evaluation was conducted using pre-test and post-test instruments alongside waste reduction estimation. Results: Evaluation results demonstrated a significant transformation in community understanding and attitudes. The Family Welfare Movement (PKK) group, empowered as agents of change, successfully adopted source-based waste sorting techniques. Eco-enzyme production proved capable of diverting 15–30 kg of household kitchen waste per month, equivalent to a 30–40% reduction in daily organic waste generation. Conclusion: This participatory-based socialization program effectively reduces organic waste volume, delivers ecological benefits by preventing methane emissions and leachate, and generates economic advantages by lowering household expenses through the utilization of eco-enzyme as a natural cleaner and liquid biofertilizer.
