Abstract

Mental health is an essential component of children’s overall well-being and plays a crucial role in supporting academic achievement, social development, and emotional growth. Schools serve as strategic settings for mental health promotion because children spend a significant portion of their time in educational environments; however, limited access to supportive and restorative outdoor spaces may negatively affect students’ psychological well-being and learning experiences. This community service program aimed to promote students’ mental health through the development of a restorative environment-based open space at SDN Tulusrejo 3. The program employed a participatory approach involving environmental assessment, mental health education, open-space development, and program evaluation. It was implemented over 4 weeks and involved 67 students and 11 teachers, along with school stakeholders. Activities included mental health education sessions, improvement of green open spaces, installation of educational media, and creation of child-friendly outdoor areas for relaxation and social interaction. Program evaluation using pre- and post-intervention assessments demonstrated a 86% increase in students’ knowledge regarding mental health and a 100% increase in participation in school-based mental health promotion activities. The utilization of the restorative open space also increased, indicating greater student engagement with the newly developed environment. These quantitative findings, supported by positive feedback from students and teachers, indicate that the intervention contributed to a more supportive and restorative learning environment. The novelty of this program lies in integrating restorative environment principles with school-based mental health promotion through the collaborative development of child-friendly green open spaces, combining environmental modification, health education, and active stakeholder participation in a single intervention model.
