Abstract

Environmental problems in elementary schools remain a challenge due to students' low awareness of waste sorting, limited implementation of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM)-based learning, and the absence of structured school waste management systems. This community service program aimed to improve environmental awareness and strengthen teachers' capacity to integrate STEAM through the utilization of recyclable materials as contextual learning resources at SDN 01 Cimone, Tangerang. The program was implemented from July to September 2025 through socialization, teacher and student training, establishment of a school waste bank, development and implementation of STEAM-based learning media from recyclable materials, as well as mentoring and monitoring. Program evaluation involved surveys of 50 students, observations of 10 teachers, documentation, and assessments of waste management practices. The results demonstrated measurable improvements in participants' environmental literacy and teaching practices. Students' waste-sorting awareness increased from 25% (12 of 50 students) to 65% (33 of 50 students), while teachers integrating STEAM into classroom instruction increased from 0% to 60% (6 of 10 teachers). The average volume of non-organic waste decreased from 12 kg/week to 8 kg/week, and five STEAM-based learning products were successfully developed from recyclable materials. In addition, a school waste bank and a Students Care for the Environment team were established to ensure program sustainability. These findings indicate that the STEAM-based recyclable material empowerment program effectively enhanced environmental literacy, teachers' instructional competence, and sustainable waste management practices in elementary schools. The model has strong potential to be replicated in schools facing similar environmental challenges.
