Abstract

The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) has brought significant transformation to educational practices, including the teaching of Indonesian language and literature. This shift requires a repositioning of teachers’ roles—not merely as transmitters of knowledge but as AI-assisted literary learning designers capable of creating creative, adaptive, and learner-centered instructional experiences. This study aims to analyze how Indonesian language teachers can optimize AI to enhance language and literary learning, while also identifying pedagogical, ethical, and professional challenges that emerge alongside its integration. This research employs a literature review method by examining eight recent scholarly articles related to AI integration in language education, digital literacy, learning design, and pedagogical innovation. The findings indicate that AI has the potential to improve instructional effectiveness through personalization, enhanced digital collaboration, increased creativity, and broader access to learning resources. However, challenges remain, including teacher readiness, digital literacy gaps, concerns about validity and ethical use of AI, and the risk of student overdependence on technological tools. This study highlights the need for teachers to develop new competencies as AI-based learning designers while upholding principles of critical literacy and academic integrity. The implications of this study provide strategic directions for teacher training, school policy development, and innovation in Indonesian language education in the era of artificial intelligence.
