Postoperative pain is a major problem experienced by breast cancer patients because it can hinder recovery, reduce mobility, and affect quality of life. The Benson relaxation technique is a non-pharmacological intervention that may reduce pain intensity by inducing a relaxation response through deep breathing, concentration on specific words or phrases, and acceptance. This study aimed to determine the effect of applying the Benson relaxation technique on pain intensity in postoperative breast cancer patients at Dr. Moewardi Hospital, Surakarta. The study used a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach. The population consisted of 35 respondents selected using consecutive sampling based on predetermined inclusion criteria. Pain intensity was measured using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), and data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test with a significance level of 0.05. The results showed that the mean pain intensity decreased from 6.03 before the intervention to 4.20 after the intervention. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test produced Z = −5.283 and p = 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant effect of the Benson relaxation technique on postoperative pain intensity. Therefore, the Benson relaxation technique is effective in reducing pain intensity and can be used as an adjunct non-pharmacological therapy in postoperative pain management.
