Abstract

Global ecological degradation is rooted not merely in environmental exploitation, but in anthropocentric and overly rationalist mindsets that sever humanity’s spiritual ties with the natural world. The Qur'an posits that every creation continuously praises Allah, endowing nature with an intrinsic theological significance beyond mere material utility. This study investigates the conceptualization of cosmic tasbīḥ within Wahbah al-Zuḥaylī’s Tafsīr al-Munīr, utilizing Surah al-Isrā’ [17]:44 as the core text alongside supporting evidence from Surah al-Nūr [24]:41 and Surah al-Ra’d [13]:13–15. Employing a qualitative library-based methodology, this research adopts a single-source thematic exegesis (maudhu’ī) approach. Primary data drawn from Tafsīr al-Munīr is complemented by secondary literature covering Islamic ecotheology, natural philosophy, scientific tafsīr, and the religion-science discourse. Data analysis follows the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, encompassing data reduction, structured presentation, and iterative verification. Findings reveal that al-Zuḥaylī conceptualizes tasbīḥ as the foundational ontology of creation, manifested through strict adherence to divine natural law (sunnatullāh) across biological life and natural phenomena. While Surah al-Nūr [24]:41 uses birds to exemplify cosmic awareness, Surah al-Ra’d [13]:13–15 extends this glorification to thunder, lightning, clouds, rain, and shadows. Synthesizing these verses constructs a framework for Cosmic Tasbīḥ Ecotheology a holistic paradigm merging tawḥīd, physical ontology, integrative epistemology (revelation and science), and environmental ethics. Ultimately, environmental stewardship in the Qur'anic framework transcends the moral mandate of human vicegerency (khalīfah), operating as a profound act of reverence toward all praising entities within the cosmos.
