Abstract

Household organic waste is the largest single component of Indonesia's national waste stream, and more than half of all municipal waste originates from households. Community service programs across Indonesia have responded by introducing household-scale composting technologies, particularly the Takakura method, and typically report favorable knowledge gains and short-term adoption rates. However, most of these programs evaluate success only immediately after training or during a brief mentoring period, leaving it unclear whether the newly adopted composting practice is actually sustained once the intervention team withdraws. This community service program was carried out in Cinunuk Village, Cileunyi District, Bandung Regency, West Java, and combined Takakura composting training with a low-cost Household Composting Monitoring Card and three scheduled follow-up visits at week 2, 4, and 8 to track practice sustainability alongside conventional knowledge and attitude indicators. Thirty housewife cadres participated in a program comprising needs assessment, socialization, hands-on training, monitoring, and evaluation. Results showed a substantial increase in composting knowledge, from a pre-test mean of 54.6 to a post-test mean of 86.3, a sustained Practice Sustainability Compliance rate of 76.7 percent by week eight, and a cumulative household organic waste reduction of approximately 47 percent. Compared with prior composting community service reports that do not track practice beyond the training period, this program demonstrates that a simple, paper-based monitoring instrument can meaningfully extend the durability of household composting behavior at negligible additional cost, offering a replicable model for other rural and peri-urban communities in Indonesia.
