COLONIALISM IN URSULA K. LE GUIN’S THE WORD FOR WORLDS IS FOREST: HISTORICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL ANALYSIS

This study investigate how colonial power, domination, and resistance are depicted in Le Guin’s The Word for World is Forest. The study also explores how the historical and biographical background influence the content of the novel. Employing a qualitative discourse analysis approach on Mandler’s psycholinguistic perspective and critical approach analysis on historical and biographical approach, the study tries to discover both objectives. The findings reveal that colonialism is depicted as a system of power that not only focuses on territorial control but also encompasses economic, cultural, and social domination. Furthermore, the practice of colonialism in this novel is reinforced through the dehumanization of the indigenous people. As a feedback from colonialized people, colonial oppression will ultimately spark resistance. Finally, the study concludes that Le Guins’s The Word for World is Forest serves not only as a work of literature but also as a social critique of colonialism. Penelitian ini mengkaji bagaimana kekuasaan kolonial, dominasi, dan perlawanan digambarkan dalam novel karya Le Guin The Word for World is Forest. Studi ini juga mengungkap bagaimana latar belakang sejarah dan biografi pengarangnya memengaruhi isi novel. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan analisis wacana kualitatif berdasarkan perspektif psikolinguistik Mandler serta analisis kritis melalui pendekatan sejarah dan biografi, penelitian ini berupaya menjawab kedua tujuan tersebut. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kolonialisme digambarkan sebagai sistem kekuasaan yang tidak hanya berfokus pada penguasaan wilayah, tetapi juga mencakup dominasi ekonomi, budaya, dan sosial. Lebih lanjut, praktik kolonialisme dalam novel ini diperkuat melalui dehumanisasi terhadap penduduk pribumi. Sebagai respons dari pihak yang terjajah, penindasan kolonial pada akhirnya akan memicu perlawanan. Akhirnya, penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa karya Le Guin ini tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai karya sastra, tetapi juga sebagai kritik sosial terhadap kolonialisme.
