Abstract

Background: The increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance has encouraged the exploration of natural products as alternative sources of antibacterial agents. Butterfly pea flower (Clitoria ternatea L.) is known to contain various bioactive secondary metabolites with potential antibacterial properties. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of butterfly pea flower extracts obtained using water, 75% ethanol, and 50% methanol against Escherichia coli and Salmonella Typhimurium. Methods: This laboratory experimental study was conducted using the agar well diffusion method on Mueller–Hinton Agar. The research was carried out at the Microbiology Laboratory of Poltekkes Kemenkes Malang from April to August 2023. Results: All extracts exhibited antibacterial activity against both bacterial strains, with varying inhibition zone diameters. The 75% ethanol extract produced the largest inhibition zones against E. coli and S. Typhimurium (18 mm each), followed by the aqueous extract (15 mm and 10 mm, respectively) and the 50% methanol extract (14 mm and 15 mm, respectively). Conclusion: Butterfly pea flower extracts demonstrated antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. Typhimurium. Among the extraction solvents evaluated, the 75% ethanol extract exhibited the highest antibacterial activity, indicating that 75% ethanol may be a more effective solvent for extracting antibacterial compounds from Clitoria ternatea flowers.
