Abstract

Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] is a toxic heavy metal associated with oxidative stress that may disrupt glucose homeostasis through damage to metabolic organs. This study evaluated the effect of acute Cr(VI) exposure on random blood glucose levels in male Wistar rats. A true experimental post-test-only control-group design was conducted using 30 rats divided into a control group receiving distilled water, a treatment group 1 receiving Cr(VI) at 1 mg/kgBW, and a treatment group 2 receiving Cr(VI) at 5 mg/kgBW. Chromium was administered orally once daily for seven days. Random blood glucose levels were measured using the GOD-PAP method and analyzed with One-Way ANOVA. Mean glucose levels were 134.40 ± 31.92 mg/dL in the control group, 142.67 ± 38.28 mg/dL in treatment group 1, and 148.92 ± 27.99 mg/dL in treatment group 2. Although glucose levels tended to increase in Cr(VI)-treated groups, no significant difference was found among groups (p = 0.620). Acute oral exposure to Cr(VI) at doses of 1 mg/kgBW and 5 mg/kgBW for seven days did not significantly affect random blood glucose levels in male Wistar rats.
