Abstract

This study was conducted in response to the low reading comprehension ability of fourth-grade students at SDN Cideng 13 Central Jakarta, as reflected by an initial learning mastery rate of only 50%. The research aimed to enhance students' reading comprehension skills through the implementation of the SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review) method. A Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model was employed and carried out in two cycles, each consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The participants were 16 fourth-grade students of SDN Cideng 13 Central Jakarta in the 2025/2026 academic year. Data were obtained through reading comprehension tests, observations of teacher and student activities, and field notes, then analyzed using descriptive quantitative and qualitative approaches. The findings demonstrated that the implementation of the SQ3R method successfully improved students' reading comprehension skills. The mean score increased from 71.25 in the pre-test to 75.60 in Cycle I and further improved to 78.75 in Cycle II. In addition, classical learning mastery increased from 50% in the pre-test to 62.5% in Cycle I and reached 75% in Cycle II. These findings suggest that the SQ3R method can serve as an effective instructional strategy for enhancing reading comprehension skills among elementary school students.
