Abstract

The grounding system is a critical component of an electrical installation because it diverts fault currents to the ground and limits potentially hazardous voltages. This study aimed to evaluate the condition of the existing grounding system in a retail warehouse, analyze the initial effectiveness of a mixture of limonite, wood charcoal, and gypsum as a soil treatment material, and evaluate a recommended grounding design using ETAP. This study employed a quantitative approach through field experiments and simulations. Grounding resistance was measured using an Earth Tester with the three-point method. Five grounding points were treated with a mixture of 2 kg per point, consisting of 40% limonite, 30% wood charcoal, and 30% gypsum. Preliminary results showed an average resistance of 10.46 Ω across the five points. After treatment, the average resistance decreased to 2.23 Ω with an initial effectiveness of 78.68%, and all treated points were below 5 Ω. In the ETAP simulation of the PLN power source, Grounding 1 produced an Rg of 3.295 Ω, GPR of 2,871.8 V, touch voltage of 1,256.1 V, and step voltage of 422.4 V. The touch voltage still exceeded the tolerance limit of 1,141.4 V. Grounding 2 reduced Rg to 1.860 Ω, GPR to 1,621.0 V, touch voltage to 648.3 V, and step voltage to 219.8 V. These results indicate that the grounding treatment effectively reduced the resistance under the test conditions, whereas Grounding 2 improved the safety of the grounding system in the PLN power source simulation scenario. Keywords: grounding system, grounding resistance, soil treatment, ETAP, touch voltage.
