Abstract

The study of nahwu plays a crucial role in Arabic language learning by ensuring accurate understanding of texts. Among prominent scholars, Ibn Malik holds a significant position through his Alfiyah, a grammatical work widely studied in Indonesia. His grammatical thought has been examined by numerous Islamic educational institutions across the country. However, limited attention has been given to Ibn Malik’s historical contribution to Arabic language learning in Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the epistemological foundations of Ibn Malik’s nahwu thought and examine its influence on Arabic language education in Indonesia. The research employs a qualitative approach based on historical analysis and library research, the study draws on primary sources, particularly Alfiyah Ibn Malik and Al-Madāris al-Naḥwiyyah, supported by relevant books and scholarly articles. Data were analyzed using content analysis, focusing on identifying Ibn Malik’s grammatical framework and its educational implications. The findings reveal that Ibn Malik’s thought is grounded in three main principles: the acceptance of hadith as grammatical evidence (istishhād), the balanced application of qiyās between the Basrah and Kufah schools, and reliance on primary linguistic causality while avoiding excessive speculative reasoning. Ibn Malik’s thought influenced Arabic education in Indonesia through Alfiyah in pesantren curricula and poetic nahwu works, including Javanese Al-Ajrumiyyah by Shaykh Mahmud Mukhtar Al-Bode and Sundanese Al-Ajrumiyyah by KH. Ishaq Farid. The study concludes that Ibn Malik’s intellectual legacy has profoundly shaped both the scholarly tradition and pedagogical practices of Arabic language education in Indonesia.
