Abstract

Islamic culture has played a central role in shaping and preserving the educational identity of Muslim minority communities in Southern Thailand, particularly in Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. This study aims to analyze how the history of Islamic culture contributes to the formation of Muslim educational identity through religious institutions, Malay cultural traditions, and the historical experience of minority communities. The study employs a qualitative library research design with a historical approach. Data were collected through documentary analysis of books, journal articles, theses, and scholarly works related to Islamization, Malay-Muslim culture, Islamic education, and cultural identity in Southern Thailand. The findings show that Muslim educational identity in Southern Thailand was shaped through the interaction between Islamic teachings, Malay cultural heritage, and educational institutions such as pondok, madrasahs, suraus, and mosques. These institutions function not only as centers of religious learning but also as spaces for transmitting Malay language, Jawi script, moral values, and collective memory. State educational reforms and modernization have transformed Islamic education, producing a hybrid model that combines classical Islamic scholarship with modern schooling. The study concludes that Islamic culture remains a foundational element in sustaining Muslim educational identity while enabling adaptive responses to social and political change.
