Abstract

Orcaella brevirostris is a warm-blooded animal commonly referred to as an endangered freshwater dolphin. The number of Mahakam dolphins that live in the Mahakam River, Kalimantan is again on the verge of extinction because of its small population, remoteness and facing various pressure factors on its survival. This study aims to determine the conservation efforts and to study how the distribution of the Mahakam dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris) in the Kalimantan River spatially. The research subjects are the surrounding community and fishermen who are in that location. The research method uses a literature study based on a comprehensive analysis of secondary data. The results showed that the results of the research showed that the Muara Pahu - Penyinggahan area, which had been the core area and one of the focal points for dolphin distribution, but is currently uninhabited, is currently developing downstream due to the number of dolphins found. in Muara Kaman. Efforts to protect the Mahakam dolphin can also be carried out, among others, through ecotourism or the water tourism industry and this fishery reserve is made in addition to functioning as a place to hunt for Mahakam dolphin feed.
