The Relationship Between Backpack Use and Low Back Pain Complaints in Grade VIII Students of Muhammadiyah 1 Middle School, Medan

Abstract

Introduction: Carrying books and school supplies is one of the heavy burdens carried by school students every day. Using an inappropriate backpack will cause negative impacts for its users. Students who carry the heaviest backpacks and use backpacks for a long time have a higher risk of suffering from low back pain. Objective: To determine the relationship between backpack use and complaints of low back pain in eighth grade students of Muhammadiyah 1 Medan Junior High School. Method: This study is descriptive analytical with a cross-sectional design. The sampling technique used Purposive Sampling. Determination of the number of samples in this study used the Slovin formula. Results: Of the 78 students who became respondents, it was found that 18 students (23.1%) did not experience pain and 60 students (76.9%) experienced pain. The results of the Chi Square test showed that the p value was 0.019, where this value was smaller than 0.05. Conclusion: It was concluded that there was a relationship between the weight of the backpack and complaints of Low Back Pain in eighth grade students of Muhammadiyah 1 Medan Junior High School.
