Abstract

Waste pollution in urban drainage systems remains a common environmental problem in urban areas, including Jalan Rela in Medan City. This study aims to analyze waste pollution in drainage culverts from the perspectives of environmental ecology and Christian ethics. The research used a descriptive qualitative approach through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results show that waste accumulation in drainage culverts is caused by low public awareness, inadequate drainage management, and limited concern for environmental cleanliness. These conditions disrupt water flow, cause flooding, create unpleasant odors, and increase environmental health risks. From an environmental ecology perspective, waste pollution reflects an imbalance in the ecosystem caused by human activities that exceed the environmental carrying capacity. Meanwhile, from the perspective of Christian ethics, littering contradicts humanity’s responsibility as stewards of God’s creation, as stated in Genesis 2:15. This study concludes that environmental problems require integrated solutions through drainage improvement, environmental education, community participation, and the strengthening of moral and spiritual values in caring for the environment.
