Abstract

This study aims to reinterpret Q. 4:32 through the perspective of Ma'na-cum-Maghza hermeneutics to assess its relevance in the contemporary discourse on gender justice. This effort aims to overcome patriarchal readings in classical interpretations by reconstructing the historical meaning of the verse and exploring its normative significance for the current socio-religious context. This study uses a text-based qualitative approach through in-depth reading and hermeneutic analysis, comparing classical, medieval and modern interpretations, and integrating Muslim feminist perspectives. The results of the analysis show that Q. 4:32 affirms the agency of both men and women and rejects hierarchical interpretations detrimental to women. The emphasis on divine grace represents broader distributive justice and supports egalitarian principles in gender relations. Through the Ma'na-cum-Maghza framework, this study concludes that Q. 4:32 provides a normative basis for equal pay, recognition of women's roles in domestic and public spaces, and family law reform based on justice and reciprocity. The novelty of this study lies in the application of Ma'na-cum-Maghza as a uniquely Indonesian hermeneutical framework that bridges the historical context with contemporary ethical demands, while strengthening the theological legitimacy for social and legal reform in Muslim societies.
