The usul al-fiqh principle of al-nahyu lil tahrim is an important guideline for understanding Islamic legal prohibitions and their legal consequences. This principle asserts that, in general, every form of prohibition (nahy) in the Sharia texts indicates unlawfulness (haram) and requires abandoning the prohibited act, unless there is a specific indicator (qarinah) that shifts the ruling to another legal status. This study aims to examine the concept of al-nahyu from both etymological and terminological perspectives and to analyze the application of the al-nahyu lil tahrim principle in Islamic legal cases. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach through library research, drawing on classical fiqh texts, reference books, and relevant academic articles. The findings reveal that al-nahyu functions not only as a prohibition but also as a mechanism to preserve public welfare and prevent harm (fasad). This is evident in the prohibition of approaching adultery as a preventive measure and the prohibition of trade during the Friday prayer call to safeguard religious obligations. Therefore, this principle plays a crucial role in ensuring harmony between Islamic law and Sharia values.
