Abstract

Most of the community’s drinking water needs are met through Refillable Drinking Water Depots (DAMIU). However, data from the Montasik Community Health Centre (2020–2024) show that diarrhoea consistently ranks among the top 10 most prevalent diseases, which is closely linked to coliform bacterial contamination. This study aims to investigate the relationship between hygiene and sanitation at DAMIUs and the presence of coliform bacteria in Montasik Sub-district, Aceh Besar Regency. This observational analytical study employs a cross-sectional approach. The study population comprises 20 DAMIUs selected via total sampling. Data were collected through direct observation and testing using the H₂S method. Data analysis was performed using Spearman’s rank correlation test. The results showed that 25.0% of drinking water samples tested positive for coliform bacteria. Facility sanitation was rated as good in 55.0% of cases, equipment sanitation as good in 35.0%, and handler hygiene as good in 40.0%. The results of the Spearman’s Rho statistical test indicated a significant relationship between premises sanitation (p = 0.018), equipment sanitation (p = 0.013), and handler hygiene (p = 0.036) and the presence of coliform bacteria. Hygiene and sanitation are significantly associated with the presence of coliform bacteria in DAMIU in Montasik Sub-district. Business operators are expected to improve sanitation standards and product quality to ensure food safety for the public.
