Abstract

Indonesia is a country with the largest Muslim majority population in the world. No doubt food products circulating in Indonesia must be halal certified. It is a very mandatory thing for product manufacturers so that their products can be traded. Halal in Islam can be viewed from two sides, namely halal in terms of substance and how to obtain it. Halal food is food that comes from plants and animals and halal food is food in which there is no mudhorot or harm to the consumer. Today many foods have undergone modifications in terms of taste, shape, color, and even genetic makeup. Modification occurs because humans develop their minds so that they find ways to modify food both from animals and plants so that it suits their needs now. The science to modify such food is the science of Biotechnology with Genetically modified. However, genetically modified food in society has caused various positive and negative responses. Negative responses question the ethicality of genetically modified foods by stating that these foods are haram. So to resolve this imbalance, it is necessary to have an Islamic legal ruling by the relevant institutions on the issue of Genetically modified
