<![CDATA[Translation plays an important role in presenting literary works from all over the world for readers to enjoy without having to bother being limited by mastery of a foreign language. To produce equivalent literary works, translation strategies are used to deal with different language systems. This research aims to investigate the strategies used by translators in translating Indonesian literary works into English. This Descriptive-Analysis study was completed using qualitative methods. The data source used is the Indonesian short story ‘Sambal Terasi’ by Isti Rahmawati. The 56 data collected were analyzed using translation strategy theory by Newmark (1988). The results showed that translators adopted (1) transference strategy, (2) transposition strategy, (3) cultural equivalent strategy, (4) functional strategy, (5) descriptive equivalent strategy, and (6) through-translation strategy. This study revealed that the dominant strategy was the transference strategy, where the translator tried to maintain a sense of originality of the author’s work. Strategies such as cultural equivalent and descriptive equivalent were used to improve readability. The findings suggested that maintaining cultural identity through transference was prioritized. This study highlights the dynamic role of translation strategies in balancing cultural preservation and target language accessibility, underscoring their importance in translating Indonesian literary works for global readers.]]>
