This study aims to explore the consumptive behavior of students of the University of Muhammadiyah Surakarta in using paylater services. This research uses a qualitative approach with phenomenological methods. Data was collected through interviews and documentation of 12 students from various faculties who have been using paylater for more than a year. The validity of the data was tested using source triangulation and member check, while the data analysis was carried out using interactive analysis techniques. The results of the study show that the main motive for students to use paylater is ease of access and practicality compared to the conventional credit system. The use of paylater has been proven to increase the frequency of online shopping and shift student consumption patterns from needs to wants. Promotions such as discounts, cashback, and free shipping are factors that drive impulsive shopping behavior. Students tend to buy non-essential items because they feel secure with a payment system that can be delayed, thus fostering excessive consumptive behavior. Overall, paylater services not only facilitate financial transactions, but also have the potential to encourage uncontrolled consumption patterns among students.
