Multicultural education in Indonesia emerged from a long journey: first, from the colonial era; second, from the melting pot education of the New Order era; and third, from multicultural education with a democratic spirit during the reform era. Multiculturalism will have implications for the world of education, especially the multicultural paradigm is also contained in Article 4 of Law No. 20 of 2003 concerning the National Education System. In this article, it is explained that education is implemented democratically, non-discriminatory by upholding human rights, religious values, cultural values, and national diversity. So, multicultural education here is an idea, namely a philosophy that emphasizes the legitimacy, vitality, and importance of diversity of social class, ethnicity and race, gender, children with special needs, religion, language, and age in shaping the lives of individuals, groups, and the nation.
