Abstract

Health literacy refers to an individual's ability to access, understand, appraise, and apply health information to make appropriate health decisions. This competency is essential for nursing professional students as it supports clinical decision-making, effective health communication, and evidence-based nursing practice. This study aimed to describe the level of health literacy regarding pediatric oncology nursing among nursing professional students. A descriptive study with a cross-sectional approach was conducted among 207 nursing professional students from three nursing education institutions in Padang City. Data were collected using the contextual modification of the European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire (HLS-EU-Q47) consisting of 47 items. The instrument demonstrated good validity with the lowest item correlation value of 0.428 (> r table 0.361) and excellent reliability with a Cronbach’s Alpha value of 0.975. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis to determine the mean score, standard deviation, minimum and maximum values, and respondent characteristics. The results showed that the mean score of health literacy regarding pediatric oncology nursing among nursing professional students was 151.42 ± 17.24, with scores ranging from 124 to 188. Most respondents were 21 years old (39.1%), female (81.6%), and had parents’ income ≥ the regional minimum wage (75.4%). This study indicates that nursing professional students have an adequate level of health literacy regarding pediatric oncology nursing. Continuous improvement of health literacy through evidence-based learning strategies, clinical case simulations, and broader clinical exposure is needed to enhance students’ readiness in providing nursing care for pediatric oncology patients.
