This study analyzes the dynamics of regional innovation performance in Kerinci Regency from 2020 to 2025, measures its performance gaps against relevant regional benchmarks, and compares its position with other regencies and cities in Jambi Province. The study employed a quantitative descriptive design using secondary data from the Regional Innovation Index published by the Indonesian Ministry of Home Affairs. The analytical techniques included descriptive statistics, annual growth analysis, trend analysis, performance stability analysis, gap analysis, and regional comparative analysis. A four-quadrant model was also applied using the average innovation index and index change to classify the performance of regencies and cities.Kerinci Regency’s Regional Innovation Index exhibited a fluctuating trajectory, declining from 57.00 in 2020 to 45.02 in 2021, recovering to 56.99 in 2024, and falling again to 50.77 in 2025. Its national ranking improved from 247th in 2020 to its best position of 101st in 2024 before deteriorating to 178th in 2025. Nevertheless, Kerinci remained above the regency–city average throughout 2021–2025. The quadrant analysis classified Kerinci as an innovation leader because it recorded an above-average innovation index and positive change. However, its widening gap with Kota Jambi in 2025 indicates that this comparative advantage has not yet become fully sustainable. Kerinci Regency should strengthen the institutionalization, documentation, monitoring, inter-agency coordination, and integration of innovation into regional development planning. These measures are required to transform temporary improvements into sustainable regional innovation capacity.
