Abstract

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease that requires long-term management through self-care behaviour. Inadequate self-care behaviour can increase the risk of complications. Self-care behaviour is influenced by various factors, including spiritual experience and religious coping, which help patients adapt to their illness. This study aimed to determine the relationship between spiritual experience and religious coping with self-care behaviour in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. This study employed a quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. The population consisted of 675 patients, with a sample of 252 patients selected using purposive sampling technique. The research instruments included the Daily Spiritual Experience Scale (DSES), Religious Coping Activity Scale (RCOPE), and Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities (SDSCA). Data analysis was performed using the Spearman Rank test with a significance level of p<0.05. The results showed that most respondents had high spiritual experience (43.3%), moderate religious coping (52.4%), and good self-care behaviour (84.1%). The Spearman Rank test indicated a relationship between spiritual experience (p=0.000; rs=0.581) and religious coping (p=0.000; rs=0.425) with self-care behaviour. Thus, it can be concluded that higher levels of spiritual experience and religious coping are associated with better self-care behaviour among patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Therefore, improving self-care behaviour can be achieved through spiritual approaches, health education, and family support to enhance patients’ quality of life.
