This study aims to describe the challenges faced by Grade VIII A students at SMP Negeri 1 Sekadau Hilir in writing fiction within a literacy-based Indonesian language learning context, to analyze the underlying factors, and to formulate contextual solutions. A descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design was employed. Data were gathered through questionnaires administered to 32 students, in-depth interviews with the teacher and three selected students, and an analysis of the students' fiction writing. Data analysis utilized the Miles and Huberman interactive model, incorporating source and technique triangulation. The results reveal that the challenges are multidimensional, encompassing difficulties with diction (3.93), plot (3.73), the learning environment (3.56), idea development (3.42), and reading interest (0.42). None of the fiction writing assessment aspects met the 70% learning objective mastery threshold (KKTP), with story structure scoring the lowest (50.73%). The root cause is the lack of fiction books in the students' environment, which hinders the development of vocabulary, imagination, and narrative skills. Proposed solutions include strengthening literacy, expanding the fiction book collection, implementing scaffolding and differentiated instruction, and innovating learning media.
