A composite of silica-modified hydroxyapatite (HA-SiO2), silica (SiO2), and cerium oxide (CeO2) has been developed as a calcium phosphate cement (CPC) for osteoporotic bone filler. The CPC was produced by mixing HA-SiO2, SiO2, and CeO2 in a ratio of 8:1:1 (w/w) with a solution of 1% Na2HPO4 at a v/w ratio of 1. A washout test was conducted using Ringer’s solution for 4 days to study the interaction of water and ions with the CPC. Anti-washout properties of a CPC are very important for successful implantation. The results showed that the immersion of CPC in Ringer’s solution for 4 days did not change the chemical and crystal properties of the HA and CeO2. Changes occurred on the CPC surface due to water intrusion and the slight dissolution of its components. However, these changes did not result in CPC washout. The released HA and CeO2 were re-deposited onto the CPC surface, sustaining the presence of CeO2 on the CPC surface. These results confirm the feasibility of further testing of CPC as a candidate for use as an osteoporotic bone filler.
