Ḥiwār practice in Arabic language learning provides opportunities for students to use Arabic through oral interaction, but they still face difficulties in moving from scripted dialogues to spontaneous oral production. This study aims to describe seventh-grade students’ experiences in ḥiwār practice and identify its perceived benefits and challenges in developing mahārah al-kalām. This descriptive qualitative study involved seven seventh-grade students at MTsN 1 Kota Surabaya. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation and analyzed through coding, data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing, supported by source and technique triangulation. The findings show that students perceived ḥiwār as an opportunity to practice speaking, build courage and confidence, and become accustomed to using Arabic. Challenges included dependence on dialogue texts, limited mufradāt, difficulty reading Arabic diacritics, and shyness or nervousness. The uniqueness of this study lies in highlighting students’ experiences in transitioning from scripted dialogues to freer oral production. Pedagogically, ḥiwār should be implemented progressively by reducing textual support and increasing opportunities for independent and spontaneous Arabic oral production.
