<![CDATA[Code-switching is the shift from one language or language variety to another in communication for certain purposes. This phenomenon often occurs in multilingual societies and is influenced by social and contextual factors. In Arabic media, code-switching can be seen in the alternation between Arabic fushā (Modern Standard Arabic) and ‘āmiyyah (colloquial Arabic). This phenomenon appears in news coverage of the Gaza War, especially in video news on YouTube. According to Fishman (1976) and Li Wei (2000), code-switching is closely related to social interaction and communication context. This study examines code-switching in video news about the Gaza War published by Arab media on YouTube during 2023–2024. The aim of this research is to describe the forms of code-switching found in the videos and to identify the factors influencing its use based on the theories of Fishman (1976) and Li Wei (2000). The study also seeks to explain how language choice reflects the communication situation in news reporting. This research uses a qualitative method with a library research design and a sociolinguistic approach. Data were collected through observation of selected video news and analyzed using content analysis based on Krippendorff’s method. The results show two forms of code-switching: the shift from ‘āmiyyah to fushā and from fushā to ‘āmiyyah. The factors influencing code-switching include the speaker, the listener, changes in situation and topic, as well as interactive, identity, and contextual factors. These findings show that language choice in media discourse is influenced by communicative needs and social context.]]>
