Abstract

Patient safety culture is a key component of healthcare quality and is greatly influenced by ward leadership as first-line managers. Challenges such as low incident reporting, a culture of blame, and inconsistent implementation of safety procedures are still commonly found. Therefore, an innovative approach is needed to strengthen clinical leadership literacy as the foundation for changing patient safety culture. To evaluate the implementation of the Leadership for Change Initiative through strengthening the leadership style literacy of ward heads. This study used a case study design with a descriptive-educational intervention approach in two hospitals, involving ward heads (n=25 on the first day; n=20 on the second day) as samples in this study. The intervention consisted of providing reading modules on six leadership styles (autocratic, democratic, transformational, transactional, participatory, and laissez-faire) and interactive learning evaluation based on Quizizz. The evaluation included concept understanding, mini case analysis, reflective questions, and leadership decision-making simulations. There was an increase in the average learning score from the first day to the second day in concept understanding (76.4% to 81.2%), case analysis (71.8% to 78.5%), reflective ability (68.2% to 75.0%), and decision simulation (73.6% to 80.1%). Participants showed an increased awareness that leadership is situational and contextual to patient safety. The Leadership for Change Initiative, based on leadership literacy modules and digital reflective evaluation, has the potential to be an effective initial strategy for increasing the awareness and leadership competencies of ward heads as a foundation for strengthening patient safety culture.
