Abstract

Background: Febrile seizures are an acute neurological disorder that commonly occurs in children aged 6 months to 5 years, and are one of the main reasons for visits to the emergency department. Although benign, inappropriate treatment can lead to complications, including the risk of recurrence and the development of epilepsy. Therefore, the competence of health workers in recognizing and managing febrile seizures is very important. Objective: To determine the relationship between the level of knowledge and skills of health workers in managing febrile seizures in children with age, gender, education, and length of service at RSU Haji Medan. Methods: This quantitative study with a descriptive analytical approach and cross-sectional design involved 75 health workers, including doctors, nurses, and midwives, who were selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected using a questionnaire and analyzed univariately and bivariately using the chi-square test (α= 0.05). Results: A total of 54.7% of respondents had good knowledge and 50.7% had good skills. There was a significant relationship between age, education, and length of service with knowledge and skills (p < 0.001), but not with gender. Respondents aged ≥40 years, medical education, and having ≥10 years of service showed higher competence. Conclusion: The knowledge and skills of health workers are classified as good, but still need to be improved in groups with lower experience and education through routine training and continuous learning.
