Abstract

The rapid expansion of the gig economy has transformed employment relationships in the transportation sector by offering flexible work arrangements while simultaneously creating challenges related to income stability, job security, and long-term workforce commitment. These conditions make understanding the factors that influence online drivers’ job loyalty increasingly important. This study examines the effects of the Gig Economy and Quality of Work Life (QWL) on Job Loyalty, with Job Satisfaction serving as a mediating variable among online transportation drivers in the Special Capital Region of Jakarta, Indonesia. A quantitative research design was employed using purposive sampling to collect data from 183 active drivers of digital ride-hailing platforms. The data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS 4. The findings reveal that both the Gig Economy and QWL have positive and significant effects on Job Satisfaction and Job Loyalty. Furthermore, Job Satisfaction significantly enhances Job Loyalty and partially mediates the relationships between the Gig Economy, QWL, and Job Loyalty. Among the examined variables, the Gig Economy exerts the strongest influence on Job Satisfaction, whereas QWL has the greatest direct effect on Job Loyalty. These findings contribute to the growing literature on platform-based employment by providing empirical evidence from Indonesia and highlighting the importance of improving drivers’ working conditions and job satisfaction to strengthen workforce loyalty. Practically, the results offer strategic insights for digital platform providers in designing policies that promote sustainable driver engagement and organizational commitment.
