<![CDATA[This study aims to analyze the narrative choices in The Chosen series and evaluate them based on the biblical testimony as the primary norm. The method employed is close viewing, supported by academic studies in theology, media studies, and film studies. The findings reveal three forms of development or alteration of the biblical accounts. First, Mary Magdalene is portrayed as a “repentant prostitute,” an image that is not found in the Gospels, accompanied by a reconstructed past created by the screenwriters. Second, the series creates character backgrounds that are not found in the Bible, such as Matthew being portrayed as being on the autism spectrum, Little James as having a disability, and Peter’s wife being given the name “Eden.” Third, Jesus’ grief over the death of John the Baptist is visualized more intensely than what is described in the Gospel texts. These findings indicate that the series tends to prioritize emotional accessibility over textual accuracy in order to establish a stronger connection with its audience. Nevertheless, the series has positive value in stimulating existential reflection, personal meaning-making, and interest in studying God’s Word. The study concludes that The Chosen succeeds in presenting Christ in an intimate and emotionally compelling manner; however, its use should be accompanied by a critical attitude, with the Bible serving as the primary standard for evaluating every scene, character, and claim presented in the series.]]>
