Abstract

Discussions of Islamic education tend to concentrate on processes, curricula, and institutions, whereas the question of where the enterprise is heading receives less sustained scrutiny. This article examines the aims of Islamic education in the Qur’an and hadith and connects them to the notion of the perfect human being (insan kamil). Using a qualitative library-based design, the study applies al-Farmawi’s thematic exegesis (tafsir maudhu’i) and complements it with a thematic reading of key hadith. Data comprise Qur’anic verses, hadith, exegetical works, and scholarly literature published between 2020 and 2026, analyzed through theme inventory, classification, linguistic and contextual analysis, and synthesis. The findings show that the aims of Islamic education are layered: servitude to God as the ultimate aim, the exercise of vicegerency as the aim of role, and well-being in this world and the hereafter as the aim of outcome, pursued through purification of the soul, the development of knowledge, and moral exemplarity. Insan kamil is not a fixed term in the scriptural texts; it is better understood as an interpretive construct summarizing the ideal human profile portrayed there, marked by six traits: firm spirituality, broad and beneficial knowledge, noble character, physical and psychological balance, social concern, and ecological responsibility. The concept remains relevant to the crisis of role models, digital disruption, and sustainability demands, provided that it is translated into indicators that can be nurtured and assessed progressively.
