Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) is still a global health problem that causes impaired respiratory function, such as increased breathing frequency, decreased oxygen saturation, and shortness of breath. In addition to pharmacological therapy, complementary therapies are needed to help improve respiratory function. Although acupressure has been shown to be beneficial in a variety of respiratory diseases, evidence regarding the effectiveness of the LU1, LU7, LU9, LI4, and LI11 point combinations in tuberculosis patients is limited. The objective of this research to analyze the effect of acupressure administration at points LU1, LU7, LU9, LI4, and LI11 on the respiratory system of pulmonary tuberculosis patients. Quantitative research with a pre-experimental design of one-group pretest–posttest was conducted on 27 pulmonary tuberculosis patients at one of the hospitals in Semarang City during May-July 2024. Samples were selected using purposive sampling. Variables measured included respiratory rate (RR), oxygen saturation (SpO₂), and Modified Borg Dyspnea Scale before and after acupressure intervention. The data was analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test with a significance level of 5%. After the intervention, the average RR decreased from 24.48 ± 1.09 to 20.70 ± 2.91 times/minute, SpO₂ increased from 95.67 ± 0.62% to 97.59 ± 1.39%, and the Borg score decreased from 4.33 ± 0.62 to 2.33 ± 1.39. All changes showed significant differences (p < 0.001). Acupressure at the LU1, LU7, LU9, LI4, and LI11 points had a significant effect on the improvement of the respiratory system of pulmonary tuberculosis patients. This intervention has the potential to become a nursing-based complementary therapy to support the improvement of respiratory function and the quality of care for tuberculosis patients. Research with a stronger design and control group is needed to confirm these findings.
