Abstract

This study examined whether training with an Electronic Push-Button Body Reaction (EPBBR) device produced a different change in device-recorded kick response time than conventional reaction training in taekwondo athletes. A parallel-group pretest–posttest experimental design was used with 32 active taekwondo athletes (15–22 years) from Banten Province, Indonesia. Participants were allocated to an EPBBR training group (n = 16) or a conventional reaction-training group (n = 16). Both groups trained three times per week for 8 weeks with equivalent session exposure. Kick response time was assessed before and after the intervention using the EPBBR device. Each assessment followed three familiarization trials and three test trials; the best performance was retained. A mixed-design analysis of variance (ANOVA) examined the effects of time, group, and the time × group interaction. In the EPBBR group, mean device-recorded response time decreased from 0.441 ± 0.086 s at pretest to 0.390 ± 0.052 s at posttest. In the control group, the corresponding values were 0.442 ± 0.087 s and 0.430 ± 0.072 s. The mixed-design ANOVA showed significant effects of time, F(1, 30) = 26.89, p < .001, ηp² = .56; group, F(1, 30) = 7.84, p = .009, ηp² = .29; and, most importantly, time × group, F(1, 30) = 19.89, p < .001, ηp² = .48. The change in device-recorded kick response time differed significantly between athletes receiving EPBBR training and those receiving conventional reaction training. The findings support an intervention-specific change in the measured response-time outcome; however, they do not establish improvements in kick technique, decision-making, or underlying neuromuscular mechanisms.
