Background: Toddlers with protein-energy deficiency require nutrient-dense supplementary foods. Makanan Formula Tempe (MFT), a locally available product rich in protein and micronutrients, offers a viable alternative to conventional milk formula. Objective: This study evaluated and compared pre- and post-intervention changes in body weight and hemoglobin (Hb) levels between toddlers receiving MFT and those in a control group receiving milk formula. Methods: This quasi-experimental study (nonrandomized pretest-posttest control group design) involved 28 toddlers aged 12–36 months in the Taktakan Health Center area. Fourteen toddlers received MFT (100 g/day), and 14 received milk formula (100 g/day) for 30 days. Results: Significant within-group increases were observed in both groups. Body weight increased in the MFT group (7.97 to 8.48 kg;) and in the milk formula group (11.34 to 11.87 kg;). Hemoglobin levels increased in the MFT group (8.91 to 11.08 g/dL;) and in the milk formula group (10.97 to 11.58 g/dL;). Descriptively, weight gain was similar between groups, whereas the increase in Hb levels was greater in the MFT group. Conclusion: Both interventions were associated with short-term improvements in body weight and Hb levels. MFT may serve as a potential locally available supplementary food alternative; however, confirmation of its comparative superiority requires further adjusted between-group analysis.
