Abstract

Abstract: Yahim Village faces a high risk of malaria (API ≥ 100); however, using bed nets causes discomfort due to heat, while mosquito coils generate smoke that poses respiratory risks. This community service initiative aimed to enhance knowledge regarding malaria prevention and to develop skills in essential oil extraction and aromatherapy candle making as mosquito-repellent solutions. Thirty participants from the Khena Mbai Malaria Cadre Group took part in activities that included interactive education, a demonstration of citronella essential oil distillation, and hands-on practice in formulating aromatherapy candles. Evaluation was conducted using pre- and post-test questionnaires and a hedonic test based on a 1–5 Likert scale. Results showed an 81% increase in average malaria knowledge (scores rising from 32.63 ± 11.131 to 87.00 ± 7.497) and an 83% improvement in technical skills (scores rising from 27.00 ± 11.788 to 88.00 ± 7.138). Product acceptance testing indicated excellent results (aroma: 4.7; texture: 4.3; color: 4.2). This practical training effectively optimized the cadres' capabilities. Follow-up programs are recommended to focus on testing repellent efficacy, providing production support, and addressing packaging compliance.
