Abstract

Pakcoy (Brassica rapa subsp. chinensis) and caisim (Brassica juncea) are leafy vegetables of the Brassicaceae family that are widely cultivated using hydroponic systems due to their fast growth, favourable economic value, and strong demand in urban markets. However, hydroponic cultivation of both commodities remains constrained by insect pest infestations that may reduce the quality and quantity of the harvest. This study aimed to identify insect species associated with hydroponically grown pakcoy and caisim under two installation systems, Deep Flow Technique (DFT) and Nutrient Film Technique (NFT), at the Experimental Garden of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Muhammadiyah Palembang, and to quantify the resulting plant damage. The study employed a survey method through direct observation and damage scoring of sample plants over four weeks of observation. Data were analysed descriptively and presented as insect population tables and damage intensity values. Eleven insect species were recorded, comprising six pest species (aphids (Aphididae), diamondback moth larvae (Plutella xylostella), rice bug (Leptocorisa oratorius), southern green stink bug (Nezara viridula), leaf-footed bug (Leptoglossus zonatus), and the torpedo bug), three natural enemies from the family Coccinellidae, and two additional species (Platypezidae and Milichiidae) considered ecologically neutral. Aphids were the most dominant pest, with a population exceeding 1,000 individuals. Damage intensity increased from 0% in the first week to the fourth week of observation, with pakcoy showing higher damage (12.00%) than caisim (5.44%), and the DFT system showing higher damage than the NFT system. These findings provide a basis for integrated pest management in hydroponic pakcoy and caisim cultivation.
