Abstract

Spent coffee grounds (SCG) contain antioxidant compounds, are easy to apply, and are environmentally friendly, making them suitable as exfoliating agents in body scrub formulations. The development of body scrubs based on natural ingredients or agro-industrial by-products has gained increasing attention in response to sustainability and eco-friendly trends. Successful product development is strongly influenced by consumer involvement, as customer characteristics and emotional factors play a significant role in purchasing decisions. The Kansei words approach is employed to capture consumer preferences and emotional responses, enabling product design that goes beyond purely functional considerations. Fuzzy Quality Function Deployment (FQFD) is applied to translate these preferences into technical characteristics while reducing uncertainty in subjective evaluations. Data were collected through consumer preference and satisfaction questionnaires to support decision-making in product development. The results indicate that emotional attributes, particularly “eye-catching,” safety, and elegance, significantly influence consumer preferences, reflecting a shift from purely functional evaluation. FQFD analysis identified 9 customer requirements (CRs) and 7 technical responses (TRs), with the selection of active ingredients and chemical composition as top priorities. Packaging aesthetics also contribute to product attractiveness, however product development remains focused on functional attributes. The utilization of SCG further supports environmental sustainability by reducing waste and promoting innovative cosmetic development.
