Praperadilan is one of the legal institutions in Indonesia's criminal justice system that serves as an internal oversight mechanism for actions taken by law enforcement officials. This study analyzes the function of praperadilan in supervising coercive actions such as arrest, detention, termination of investigation and prosecution, as well as compensation and rehabilitation for suspects. The research method used is normative legal research with a statutory approach, conceptual approach, and case approach. The results show that praperadilan has a strategic position as a control mechanism to prevent abuse of authority by law enforcement officials. However, in practice, praperadilan faces various obstacles including limited scope of examination, absence of a clear burden of proof arrangement, and the dependence of praperadilan judges on information submitted by law enforcement officials. The effectiveness of praperadilan is also hampered by the absence of follow-up mechanisms against decisions that grant praperadilan requests. This study recommends the need for strengthening the institutional and procedural aspects of praperadilan in the context of the new Criminal Procedure Code reform to make praperadilan function more optimally as an oversight mechanism in the criminal justice system.
